What Are Assisted Living Facilities and ALFs

Question Mark

Don’t start jumping up and down while blowing steam out of your ears like Yosemite Sam because you don‘t have a “facility”. You can turn a house into a facility with a few strokes of the pen.

Nursing homes are usually constructed for the purpose of becoming a nursing home.

Assisted Living Facilities are designed for people who can’t do much for themselves. People in ALFs can usually do a few a daily activities on their own.

In most states, nursing homes are more like private hospitals without full time doctors. Assisted living facilities are more like houses with full time care-providers such as CNAs.

Here’s what the “National Center for Assisted Living” says about assisted living facilities:

  • About one million Americans reside in assisted living facilities.

  • Assisted living is a growing and dynamic form of residential care, serving primarily elderly people and individuals with disabilities.

  • Assisted living is more than a physical setting – it embraces a philosophy of care.

Here’s their philosophy on providing assisted living services:

“Created in response to customer preferences and demand for individual-centered care, assisted living facilities provide assistance with physical activities and health-related needs.

Assisted Living Facilities also strive to meet the social, emotional, cultural, intellectual, and spiritual well-being of residents.”

Before we talk about Assisted Living Facilities and the different shapes and sizes they come in, we have to talk about Assisted Living in general. I don’t want you to think that you‘re going to be opening a nursing home.

Your ALF is going to provide a simply lovely place for people to live when they need something between living alone, or going to a nursing home.ALFs have been a closely guarded real estate secret until now.

Unlike other types of real estate investing, the only work you have to do is getting your property licensed. Depending on which state you live in, you must have at least one state licensed monitor or counselor living or working in your ALF at all times.

A Must-Read for Any Potential Assisted Living Facility Owner!
