A Day In The Life of an Assisted Living Facility

So now you that know what won’t go on in your ALF, lets take a look at what should go on everyday. the activities and number of staff will be different if your assisted living faicility is a multi-unit ALF in a small apartment building.

7:00 AM The day shift CNA  works from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. After being “briefed” by the overnight CNA, the 7:00 CNA dresses and readies the residents for breakfast. The aid makes and serves the breakfast in the dining area.

After breakfast, the residents usually return to their rooms if they decide not to hang out in the common areas.

The CNA cleans up after breakfast, washes the dishes in the dishwasher, and gets the area ready for lunch. Your ALF will need a high end dishwasher, or one that was made for large families due to the extra use it will see.

The CNA checks the residents every few minutes. You must insist on accurate logs and reports that should exceed and at the very least meet your state’s guidelines for reports.

Around 10:00 AM, its usually bathroom time for most, if not all, of the residents before the begin their daily planed activities.

10:30 AM is snack time, usually a  drink and fruit. The residents do whatever they want (or can) do until lunch is served around noon.

After lunch the CNA brings the residents to the bathroom, and makes sure everyone is clean and dry. The residents usually hang out in the common areas playing cards or enjoying the little extras you added to your ALF.

CNA

The CNA does what ever laundry needs washed and put away. The CNA usually makes some sort of soup and bread snack, and serves it around 2:00 PM.

About 2:30 PM,  most residents take a nap in their rooms. The CNA fills out the log, noting how residents were during the CNA’s shift, and completes any incident reports required by law. When in doubt, insist that a report be completed.

3:00 PM. The afternoon CNA is briefed by the day shift CNA, and then does a head count to make sure all residents are present and accounted for.

The CNA starts dinner while the residents nap. Around 4:00 PM, the CNA wakes everyone up and helps them to the bathroom if they need help.

4:30 PM Dinner is served. After dinner, the CNA cleans up, and does the dishes. After dinner, the CNA goes into the bedrooms, and turns down the beds, and takes out the residents’ night clothes. Medications are dispensed to some residents who need to take their's with food.

6:00 PM Usually includes a trip to the bathroom for everyone who needs help. The CNA washes down the bathroom and all the counters with bleach, water, and soap.

7:00 PM is snack time again, usually cookies and tea, milk, or juice.

8:00 PM is shower time and any assistance needed is performed by the CNA.

9:00 PM is bedtime. After getting the residents to bed, the CNA cleans the kitchen, vacuums the living room, dusts, and does any food prep if needed for the next day.

Any new dirty laundry is done at this time. The afternoon report and logs are done, and the 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM CNA comes back in.

The nightshift CNA does another head count and monitors the residents in their rooms with one of those baby monitor type devices. Don’t freak out, they’re only about $30.00.

So that will be a day in the life of YOUR ALF.

No wild parties, kids writing on the walls, pets ruining the carpet, or car engines in the back bedroom. All you landlords who have been around a while know I’m not making this stuff up.

Most of these things happened in rentals I managed until the ALF conversion mind-set took over.
